George Slyfield was born in Hurst on 21st September 1883 to William and Ellen Slyfield,
the second eldest of seven children.
He was christened on 28th October that year at St.Nicholas Church.
The family lived in King Street, Winnersh and in May 1888 George started at Bearwood Country Primary School.
George left school in April 1898 and by 1901 he was working and living as a domestic groom
at Winnersh Lodge, close to his parent's home.
By 1911 George was lodging with the Nicholls family at Bowden Green, Pangbourne, and still working as a domestic groom.
On the 9th April 1912 George married Florence Emma Taylor at St.Nicholas Church, Hurst.
George gave his occupation as coachman.
In 1918 Geroge was serving as a corporal in the Army Service Corps in northern France.
He died of pneumonia on 22nd October.
He is buried in
Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension.
