Herbert West was born in Cholsey in 1878 to Rose Baldwin, a Field Woman.
He was born out of wedlock and was initially known as Herbert Baldwin.
Rose and Herbert lived with Herbert's grandparents in the former workhouse in Cholsey.
By 1891 Rose had married James West, an agricultural carter, and Herbert was living with them in Battle Cottage, Goring.
Ten years later Rose had moved with Herbert to Hatchgate Cottages, Hurst and Herbert was working as a cowman on a farm.
Nothing is known of Herbert's life from this point onwards except that he served in the Army Service Corps during the First World War.
No medals were awarded to Herbert and so it is unlikely that he served overseas.
Herbert West died in the UK on 29th March 1915 and rests in
Aldershot Military Cemetery;
he was thirty-six years old.
They shall not grow old,
as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
and in morning
We will remember them.
